Commodore Steve Chick joined the Royal Navy in 1979. After completing a Naval Engineering degree, his initial bridge watch keeping appointment was in HMS LEEDS CASTLE, conducting fishery protection duties around the UK. On qualifying as a Fighter Controller, he joined HMS EDINBURGH and completed a deployment in the Middle East during the Iran/Iraq War, and a deployment to the Far East in the following year.

Qualifying as a Principal Warfare Officer in 1990, he served in the Leander class frigate HMS MINERVA as the Operations Officer, before joining HMS ARK ROYAL and completing two Adriatic deployments in support of operations in Bosnia. Command appointments have included HMS NOTTINGHAM (96-98), which included a deployment to the Middle East and Operation Bolton (Iraq); HMS Chatham (03-05), which also included a Middle East deployment, and HMS ILLUSTRIOUS (07-09) which included a further deployment to the Middle East. In recognition of HMS CHATHAM's contribution to disaster relief operations off Sri Lanka following the Tsunami he was appointed CBE in 2006. On promotion to Commodore he assumed command of SNMG2 (09-10), a NATO Task Group comprising 5 frigates and destroyers, flying his flag initially in HMS CORNWALL, then the Greek ship LIMNOS and finally HMS CHATHAM, completing two deployments countering pirates off Somalia and a period of operations in the Mediterranean. He was awarded a NATO Meritorious Service Medal in 2011. From 2010 until assuming his current appointment in March 2012 he commanded the Devonport Flotilla comprising frigates, submarines and hydrographic vessels.

Shore appointments have included the Directorate of Naval Operations (95-96) and Flag Officer Surface Flotilla (98-00) with responsibilities for warfare policy, and the Equipment Capability area (00-02) as an Assistant Director responsible for defining the requirements for future equipment, including the CVF and Type 45 programmes. As Deputy to Flag Officer Sea Training (05-07), he was responsible for training all RN major surface units as well as a number of foreign ships. He attended the Higher Command Staff Course in 2003.

He is married with two children and lives in Somerset. Outside of enjoying family life, his interests include DIY, restoring a French farmhouse and any sport at a mediocre standard. He is a Vice President of the Royal Navy Football Association.
